Elon Musk Considers Launching an E-Commerce Platform to Compete with Amazon

Elon Musk has raised the possibility of launching a competing e-commerce platform after Amazon restricted Grok AI bots from conducting shopping transactions. The proposed venture could leverage X and Grok's AI capabilities to enable automated online shopping.

Elon Musk, Amazon

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has raised the idea of launching a competing e-commerce platform after Amazon blocked Grok AI bots from conducting shopping transactions. The proposal, which emerged through a post on X, involves creating an alternative system where AI assistants could shop online on behalf of users. Musk has not yet announced an official plan to launch the potential venture.

Elon Musk Responds to Proposal for Shopping Platform Called X Shop

The discussion began when an X user revealed that Amazon had blocked orders placed through Grok bots. The user, who stated that they had been using one of the Grok bots to manage product returns on Amazon, suggested that Musk establish a new shopping platform called "X Shop."

On October 15, 2026, Elon Musk quoted the post and stated, "Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon." However, no information was provided on whether the proposed platform would operate within X or as an independent e-commerce website.

Amazon Restricts Grok's Shopping Transactions

Amazon is restricting third-party AI tools such as Grok from placing orders on behalf of users. Customers attempting to shop through Grok are shown warnings stating that unauthorized AI agents accessing Amazon's services violate the platform's terms of use. Amazon, which is developing its own AI-powered shopping tools, is also imposing access restrictions on software developed by other companies that automates product searches and purchasing transactions.

Amazon Also Blocks Meta's Muse AI Assistant

Amazon has also blocked Muse, an AI assistant developed by Meta, from making purchases on behalf of customers. Amazon stated that Meta had not informed the company in advance that Muse would access its platform, that the application was operating without identifying itself, and that it appeared to be recording customer login credentials.

The company stated that, before blocking access, it had asked Meta to remove Amazon from the scope of the Muse service. It also emphasized that third-party shopping applications must operate transparently and respect the decisions of the businesses whose platforms they access.

Elon Musk's E-Commerce Venture Could Take Shape Through X and Grok

It was reported that the potential platform proposed by Elon Musk could leverage X's user network and Grok's artificial intelligence capabilities. Product discovery, price comparisons, and automated purchasing transactions are among the potential use cases being considered.

There has been no confirmed announcement regarding the marketplace model, seller network, payment infrastructure, or delivery processes of the venture proposed by Elon Musk. If the project is launched, the activities of Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who compete in the space industry through SpaceX and Blue Origin, could also come into direct competition in the e-commerce and retail sectors.
