Dubai’s Population and Consumer Spending Exceed Pre-Crisis Levels

Dubai’s population and consumer spending have surpassed pre-crisis levels. A statement from the emirate’s economic authorities highlighted the role of population growth and spending activity in the economic recovery, while also bringing attention to the importance of consumer demand for the retail and e-commerce sectors.
The “Dubai Business Forum, China,” held in Shenzhen, China, showcased the business opportunities Dubai offers to Chinese companies. During the event, officials outlined opportunities to expand cooperation with China, which already holds a significant position in the emirate’s trade and investment relations. The forum brought together 854 Chinese investors and business leaders, along with 112 senior representatives from Dubai’s public and private sectors. Organized under the leadership of Dubai Chambers, this participation marked the largest delegation the organization has ever taken abroad.
“Dubai’s Response to the Disruptions Is a Demonstration of Its Economic Resilience”
Hadi Badri, CEO of the Dubai Economic Development Corporation, stated at the forum that Dubai’s economy was recovering from the adverse effects of regional developments, supported by population growth and domestic economic activity. Badri described Dubai’s response to the disruptions as “a demonstration of its economic resilience.” He noted that coordination among government institutions and long-term investments in infrastructure and essential services had helped maintain confidence.
Badri stated that Dubai’s economic growth depends not only on its ability to attract new residents, businesses, and capital but also on the transportation networks and public services necessary to support them.
Population Growth Supports Demand in Dubai
Badri identified Dubai’s population growth as one of the key drivers of economic expansion and compared the emirate’s development with other international business hubs, including Singapore. Badri linked Dubai’s long-term attractiveness to the infrastructure and institutions that enable businesses and families to establish themselves in the city. He also addressed the role of schools, alongside population growth and domestic economic activity, in assessing the city’s development and economic resilience.
When comparing Dubai with competing international business hubs, Badri highlighted the emirate’s performance in attracting foreign investment and the investment returns offered by financial markets, real estate, and operating businesses. Badri described tourism as an important source of potential future residents of Dubai. He also linked tourist numbers to the city’s long-term population growth and economic expansion.
Badri regarded tourists as potential individuals who could become part of Dubai’s future resident population. However, he did not provide any data on the proportion of tourists who subsequently settle in Dubai. Badri emphasized that China remains an important partner in Dubai’s broader growth strategy, drawing attention to opportunities in logistics, manufacturing, hospitality, finance, family offices, and technology.
