Google Launches “Universal Cart” Feature That Combines Shopping from Different Stores into a Single Cart

Google Launches Universal Cart for AI-Powered Shopping

Google has launched its AI-powered Universal Cart feature in the United States, bringing together products from different e-commerce and retail platforms in one place. Accessible through Google Search and the Gemini app, the new system allows consumers to collect products selected from different stores in a shared shopping cart, track price changes, and manage their purchases.

Universal Cart Brings Together Products from Different Stores

The new shopping tool, announced by Google on October 15, 2026, enables users to save products they like from different retailers in a single digital shopping list. Users can add products they discover through Google Search's AI Mode to their cart and access the same products when they switch to the Gemini app. Their shopping progress is preserved, eliminating the need for consumers to search for products again across different websites.

Suresh Ganapathy, Senior Director of Product Management for Consumer Shopping at Google, stated that the company is focused on developing systems capable of performing transactions on behalf of users in commerce technologies and providing consumers with tools that give them control over their shopping processes.

AI Tracks Price Drops and Stock Availability

Powered by Google's Shopping Graph infrastructure, which contains more than 60 billion continuously updated product listings, Universal Cart tracks product prices and changes in stock availability. The system sends notifications to users when the prices of products added to their carts drop or when out-of-stock products become available again. AI technology also identifies applicable promotional codes and displays discounts that can be used during shopping.

Smart Payment Options Offered Through Google Wallet

Universal Cart, which utilizes Google Wallet infrastructure, evaluates the benefits associated with users' credit cards and recommends suitable payment methods. Operating through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the payment system allows consumers to complete their purchases using Google Pay or transfer products directly to the shopping cart on the retailer's website. Target, Walmart, Wayfair, and numerous retailers using Shopify infrastructure are among the supported shopping experiences. Order confirmations and customer service continue to be provided by the retailers.

Google Expands Its AI-Powered E-Commerce Tools

Google first introduced Universal Cart technology at the Google I/O event held in May 2026. The company's AI-powered shopping solutions also include conversational product discovery through Google Search's AI Mode feature and the Let Google Call system, which calls local stores to inquire about stock availability. Technology companies such as Amazon and OpenAI are also working on integrating AI agents into shopping processes. Google's new feature is planned to be integrated into YouTube and Gmail services in the future.
