Tata Motors and Amazon to Deploy 3,000 EV Trucks in India

India-based commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors and US e-commerce company Amazon have launched a partnership to deploy 3,000 electric trucks in their logistics operations in India. Under the agreement, the vehicles will be used for transportation between Amazon's distribution centers and on intercity freight routes. The first vehicles have entered service in the capital, New Delhi.

Tata Motors to Manufacture Electric Trucks for Amazon's Logistics Operations

The agreement between Tata Motors and Amazon represents the largest electric truck deployment program planned by an e-commerce company in India. The vehicles are expected to be gradually integrated into Amazon's transportation network over three years.

Under the agreement, Tata Motors will be responsible for supplying the electric trucks. Ownership and operation of the vehicles will be handled by Amazon's contracted logistics service providers. In the initial phase, 20 Tata Ultra E.7 electric trucks entered service in New Delhi. At the ceremony attended by India's Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, H. D. Kumaraswamy, the objective of expanding the use of electric vehicles in commercial transportation was discussed.

Electric Trucks to Operate Along a 2,800-Kilometer Route

Amazon will initially integrate the electric trucks into its urban logistics operations in Delhi. The light- and medium-duty vehicles will be used in the middle-mile logistics network, which transports e-commerce orders between warehouses and distribution centers.

In the next phase, the project is planned to expand to national highways. The companies aim to increase the use of electric trucks along the approximately 2,800-kilometer NH48 freight corridor connecting Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure will also be developed along the route, which passes through seven states and connects six major e-commerce regions in India. Charging facilities developed in cooperation with charging service provider Yahhvi will be used for this purpose.

Amazon Operates More Than 15,000 Electric Vehicles in India

Abhinav Singh, Amazon's Vice President of Operations for Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and Türkiye, announced that the company operates more than 15,000 electric vehicles across over 500 cities in India. Singh stated that the new partnership is linked to Amazon's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. He explained that the company aims to expand the use of electric vehicles beyond last-mile deliveries and increase their adoption in intercity freight transportation.

Amazon's electric vehicle operations in India are also supported by existing charging infrastructure. Ten charging sites developed by Yahhvi across the country support the use of electric vehicles within the company's transportation network.

Tata Motors to Provide Charging and Maintenance Services

Rajesh Kaul, Vice President of the Trucks Business Unit at Tata Motors, announced that the partnership with Amazon covers not only vehicle supply but also charging infrastructure, maintenance, and operational support services. The Tata Ultra E.7 model to be supplied by the company is designed for urban and regional logistics operations. The vehicle features fast charging, regenerative braking, and various safety systems.

The project also aligns with the Indian government's PM E-DRIVE program, which aims to support electric mobility. Under Delhi's 2026 electric vehicle policy, the first 1,000 privately owned medium-duty electric trucks that meet the specified conditions are expected to be granted round-the-clock access to the city for 10 years.
